Lean on a Gate and MATES in Construction NZ have joined forces because we believe that suicide is everyone’s business. In rural New Zealand, there is a critical need for proactive, tailored mental health support that reaches our people before they hit a crisis point. This partnership combines the grassroots, community-led reach of lean on a gate with the evidence-based clinical support and case management of MATES in Construction. Together, we are building a visible safety net across your entire business.

We provide a structured programme designed to embed a culture of care into every branch of your operation.
Community awareness training
We start on the ground by gathering your team for a practical awareness session. This is for everyone, teaching your people how to identify when a mate is struggling and giving them the confidence to check in.
ASIST: accredited safety aider helpers
Next, we provide key staff with applied suicide intervention skills training (ASIST). This is an internationally recognised, two-day workshop that equips people to become safety aider helpers.
- The impact: ASIST is proven to reduce suicidality; people supported by ASIST-trained helpers are 74% less likely to remain suicidal.
- The skills: Your team will learn a structured safety plan to support someone in distress and connect them safely to further professional help.
SafeTALK volunteers: visible support
To ensure support is always accessible, we establish SafeTALK volunteers at each branch. These individuals are the frontline "connectors" identified by clear signage: "I’m a SafeTALKer — lean on me". They are trained to recognise invitations for help and bridge the gap to professional support.
